COMMUNICATING WITH INDONESIANS
1 hour documentary entitled
Sunda Rahayu
In 2008-2009 while on scholarship studying traditional Balinese arts at ISI Denpasar, I had the occasion to visit the City of Bandung in West Java where I was invited to film a documentary about a local traditional ceremony that was to take place for the first time in over a hundred years.
I felt compelled to take up the offer so, whenever there was a break from studies in Bali, I made my way to West Java to meet with various traditional cultural leaders and film the preparations for the ceremony.
The documentary that emerged focuses on the 11-day journey by foot from the remote area of Kanekesh where a people known as the Baduy tribe live in deliberate isolation maintaining their ancestral customary way of life, to the modern city of Bandung and onward to the nearby volcano - Mt-Tangkuban Perahu where the ceremony took place.
